DeepSeek AI for U.S. Users: Chat, App, API, and Privacy
DeepSeek AI is an AI assistant and model family for working with text, code, and other supported inputs. You can use the official chat service, install the mobile app, build with the API, or explore published model weights. The right starting point depends on whether you want a conversation, an application integration, or control over deployment.
For the official hosted chat, DeepSeek’s Terms of Use require account registration. Follow the sign-in or registration instructions on the official site.
DeepSeek-USA.ai is an independent guide for U.S. readers and is not affiliated with DeepSeek. The buttons above lead to DeepSeek’s own services. For a fuller introduction to the company, assistant, and models, read our beginner’s guide to DeepSeek.
Choose how you want to use DeepSeek
Start with the task you want to complete. A chat account, an API integration, and a downloaded model involve different setup, billing, and data-handling decisions.
| Access method | Choose it for | Check before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Official web chat | Trying the assistant in your browser | Account requirements, available tools, and privacy settings |
| Official mobile app | Chatting from your phone or tablet | The correct listing and compatibility with your device |
| DeepSeek API | Connecting models to software or supported developer tools | API credentials, current model names, usage charges, and platform terms |
| Published models and repositories | Evaluating a model for your own deployment | The exact license, hardware requirements, and inference software |
For everyday use: web chat or the mobile app
Open the official chat destination to begin in a browser. For mobile access, use the U.S. Apple App Store listing or the DeepSeek listing on Google Play, and check compatibility with your account and device. Apple’s listing identifies the seller as Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. Our DeepSeek app guide explains the download routes and basic setup.
For developers: start with the API documentation
The official API documentation explains authentication and first requests. Its current instructions recommend deepseek-flash for DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash. Use current documentation when selecting a model; an identifier copied from an older tutorial may refer to a retired model or a compatibility alias.
Follow our DeepSeek API guide for implementation details. Keep your API key out of public code, shared screenshots, and prompts, and review billing before connecting an automated workflow.
For your own deployment: check the exact model
Published weights give you a deployment option, but they do not establish that a particular model will run on your laptop. Check its model card, license, memory requirements, and supported runtime first. For example, the official V4.1-Flash model card includes inference documentation. Our model guide collection helps you explore specific releases.
Using a desktop agent? DeepSeek also offers Harness through its official download page. A desktop interface can still send requests to a remote model: the Harness privacy policy explains that custom-model inputs go directly to the configured model provider. Check that provider and the tools you enable before giving an agent access to files.
Is DeepSeek AI free?
DeepSeek currently describes its official mobile assistant as free on its download page, and the U.S. Apple listing shows it as Free. That does not make every way of using DeepSeek free.
- Consumer app: start with the official listing and check the access terms shown to your account.
- API: usage is billed separately. Consult the official pricing page and your platform account before estimating costs.
- Your own deployment: model access and operation are separate expenses. Hardware or cloud hosting, maintenance, and any third-party provider charges belong in your budget.

What can DeepSeek help you do?
Useful starting tasks include explaining a concept, outlining a document, rewriting a passage, examining a coding problem, or summarizing material you are allowed to share. Give it a clear goal and enough context to produce an answer you can evaluate.
Capabilities also depend on the model and interface. DeepSeek’s V4.1-Flash release announcement describes native visual understanding and multimodal API support. Its model card specifies image and text input with text output. That does not establish identical upload options or tools in every app, third-party service, or deployment.
Choose a task with a checkable result: a shorter draft, an explanation you can compare with a textbook, or code you can test. For research, open the original sources and verify names, dates, and numbers. A fluent answer or a detailed reasoning explanation is not proof of accuracy.
Try a first prompt you can evaluate
For a first conversation, choose public information or a practice task that needs no personal data. This illustrative learning prompt gives the assistant a topic, audience, output format, and follow-up task:
Explain the difference between a variable and a function to someone learning Python. Use one short example of each, then give me three practice questions. Do not answer the questions until I try.
After the response, run the small code examples or compare the explanation with Python documentation. Ask for a simpler explanation if a point is unclear. For another task, use the same pattern: state your goal, describe the audience, set the format, and identify any constraints.
DeepSeek’s Terms of Use warn that outputs can contain errors or omissions. Verify information that could affect an important decision, and use qualified sources for medical, financial, legal, or security-sensitive matters.
Can you use DeepSeek in the United States?
The official app has a U.S. Apple App Store listing. That is evidence of a U.S. storefront presence, but access can still depend on your account, device, network, and organization. DeepSeek’s Terms do not guarantee availability or identical features in every jurisdiction.
Restrictions need their context. For example, the Texas Department of Information Resources lists DeepSeek among technologies prohibited on state-owned devices and networks, with agency-approved exceptions. That policy concerns specified government use; it does not establish a nationwide ban on personal consumer access.
Before using DeepSeek for work, school, or government duties, check your organization’s approved tools and data rules. Being able to open a website does not establish permission to submit organizational information.
Check privacy before sharing information
DeepSeek’s published privacy policy identifies Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. as the controller and states that personal data is collected, processed, and stored in China. It lists account information, prompts and uploads, chat history, and device and usage information among the data it may collect.
The policy describes using data to train and improve its technology. The Terms of Use describe an opt-out from the specified input/output improvement processing by switching off “Improve the model for everyone.” Check the controls available in your service; do not assume that a consumer setting applies to every API or third-party integration.
You can manage or delete chat history through settings, according to the privacy policy. Retention also depends on purposes and legal obligations, so deleting a conversation should not be treated as a guarantee of immediate removal of every retained record.
- Remove identifying details before asking for help with a personal situation.
- Keep passwords, API keys, payment details, private records, and confidential work material out of general chat prompts.
- For another provider or your own runtime, check where requests go, what is logged, and which policy applies.
Developer integrations have additional obligations under the Open Platform Terms. A downstream application’s operator must disclose its own processing rules. Our DeepSeek privacy guide explains the published policy in more detail.
DeepSeek or ChatGPT: compare your actual task
Start with a task you expect to repeat. Give both tools the same non-sensitive prompt, relevant context, and output requirements. Compare factual correctness, useful detail, the editing needed, available tools, and the cost of the setup you would actually use. For coding, run the generated code rather than judging its explanation alone.
Compare consumer assistants with consumer assistants, and API services with API services. Review each provider’s terms separately. Our DeepSeek vs ChatGPT guide provides a fuller comparison of assistants and developer APIs.
If DeepSeek will not load or respond
Check the official service status first. Then confirm that you are using the official destination, review the account or error message, and check whether your network permits the service. For API errors, use the official documentation and check authentication, model selection, and billing. Avoid installing an unfamiliar replacement app simply because the official service is temporarily unavailable..
DeepSeek AI FAQs
Can I use DeepSeek if I am under 18?
DeepSeek’s Terms of Use say its services are primarily intended for adults. Users under 18, or below the minimum age applicable in their country, must review the terms with a legal guardian and use the services only with that guardian’s consent. An app-store content rating does not replace these requirements.
Who can see a shared DeepSeek conversation?
According to DeepSeek’s sharing terms, anyone with access to a conversation’s shared link can view the linked conversation. Review its contents before sharing, and avoid exposing personal information or confidential material. Publishing the link publicly can also make the conversation accessible to third parties beyond your intended audience.
Does DeepSeek’s privacy policy cover third-party apps?
DeepSeek’s privacy policy excludes the end-user data-processing rules of downstream applications built by other developers using its platform. The application’s operator must explain its own practices. Before submitting information, check who operates the app, where your prompts go, and what its policy says about storage, sharing, and model training.
Can I publish text generated by DeepSeek?
DeepSeek’s Terms of Use permit a range of uses subject to applicable law and their conditions. When publishing or distributing outputs, the terms require checking accuracy, clearly identifying the content as AI-generated, and following usage restrictions. Outputs may resemble those given to other users; receiving an answer does not guarantee originality or freedom from third-party rights.
