DeepSeek vs Mistral: Which AI Model Provider Should You Use?

Last verified: October 8, 2026

DeepSeek vs Mistral comes down to the model, API route, and workload you actually need. Start with DeepSeek Flash for evaluating repeated, cache-heavy text workflows. Consider Mistral when you need smaller open-weight models, a dedicated OCR or audio service, or a documented regional inference option.

For inexpensive general-purpose API work, compare DeepSeek Flash and Mistral Small 4 directly. Their standard uncached-input and output rates match when Flash is off-peak; Small 4 is lower on those two rates during Flash peak hours. Flash has the lower cache-hit rate. These are published unit-price differences, not proof that either model completes every task more cheaply. DeepSeek pricing; Mistral pricing.

Long context is no longer a DeepSeek-only distinction in this comparison: Mistral Large 4 also lists a 1M-token context window, but is in Public Preview. Separately, DeepSeek V4 Pro continues as its own service rather than simply routing to Flash. The sections below separate availability, pricing, capabilities, and deployment so those differences do not get lost.

This is a documentation-based comparison. The recommendations identify models to evaluate; they do not claim hands-on benchmark results or a universal winner.

What are we comparing: companies, models, APIs, or open weights?

Separate four layers before choosing a provider:

  1. Company and platform: procurement, support, and the wider product ecosystem.
  2. Hosted API: exact model ID, supported endpoints, billable usage, quotas, and processing location.
  3. Individual models: compare Flash with Small 4 for a lower-cost baseline, and include Large 4 or V4 Pro when their capabilities fit the task.
  4. Open-weight deployment: downloadable artifacts, license terms, serving software, memory, and operating cost.

An inexpensive hosted endpoint is not automatically a practical local model. Likewise, a feature in a provider’s agent platform is not necessarily available through every model or compatible API. Consumer-app subscriptions are separate from the token prices compared here.

Current DeepSeek lineup

The current Flash API identifier is deepseek-flash, serving DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash. The previous deepseek-v4-flash and deepseek-v4-flash-vision-exp model names remain compatibility aliases for retired models. Use the current identifier for new Flash integrations. DeepSeek API change log.

DeepSeek V4 Pro remains available separately. The change log confirms that its API service continues after September 14, 2026, with the billing method unchanged. The earlier Flash announcement described a phase-out plan; that plan is not the current policy. The pricing table identifies deepseek-v4-pro as DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813 with its own rates.

Model capabilities come from the DeepSeek model reference. The V4.1 Flash model card describes 552B backbone parameters, native image-and-text processing, and its license. Our DeepSeek V4.1 Flash guide covers that model in more detail.

Keep Pro and Flash distinct in application settings, evaluations, and cost reports. Continued availability does not prove that Pro is the better model for your task; it means its actual behavior and price should be evaluated rather than assumed to be Flash’s.

Current Mistral lineup

Mistral’s catalog includes general-purpose models alongside code, OCR, audio, embeddings, and moderation products. The table focuses on the models most relevant to this comparison rather than treating the entire platform as one model.

Large 4 launched in Public Preview on October 6, 2026. Mistral’s change log says its weights are coming soon, and the launch announcement says they are planned for later in October. At this review, the preview API is available; a promised weight release is not an available download. Do not infer an Apache 2.0 license from the licenses of older Mistral models.

Large 3, Medium 3.5, and Small 4 remain listed as GA on their model pages. A new preview does not automatically retire them. Check the model lifecycle policy before changing an existing integration, particularly one using a moving latest alias.

DeepSeek vs Mistral pricing

The text-model table uses USD per one million tokens. Input means regular or cache-miss input; cached input means tokens actually billed as cache hits. These are direct-provider prices, excluding taxes, regional premiums, batch or priority adjustments, negotiated terms, and separate tool charges.

DeepSeek peak hours are 01:00–04:00 and 06:00–10:00 UTC, Monday through Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays. Other hours are off-peak. Use UTC when scheduling U.S. workloads because local conversions change with daylight saving time. DeepSeek pricing and schedule.

Sources: DeepSeek Models & Pricing and Mistral API pricing. Large 4’s model page displays original rates of $1.36 input, $0.14 cached input, and $4.18 output beside the sale prices. The October 6 change-log entry describes a 50% launch discount for two weeks; budget beyond that promotion using the rates applicable when you deploy.

Flash is not automatically the cheapest choice. Small 4 matches its off-peak uncached-input and output prices, and undercuts its peak rates for those categories. Flash’s cache-hit rate is lower in both periods. That comparison concerns these two models and billing categories—not every model in Mistral’s catalog or the cost of completing an identical task.

For example, Ministral 3 3B lists $0.10 input and $0.10 output per million tokens. It is a different capability and size class, but illustrates why provider-wide price rankings can mislead. Choose an acceptable-quality model before declaring a cost winner.

How timing and cache hits change the bill

For the text-token categories above, calculate cost = (uncached tokens × input rate + cached tokens × cached-input rate + output tokens × output rate) / 1,000,000. Add any separately billed services. Use the provider’s recorded usage, including billable reasoning output where applicable.

The following calculations assume equal billable token counts on both sides, no extra fees, and the stated number of actual cache hits. They are illustrative arithmetic, not measured performance or guaranteed cache savings. The same prompt may tokenize differently across models.

Assumed usage for one requestFlash off-peakFlash peakSmall 4 standard
10,000 uncached input + 1,000 output tokens$0.002100$0.004200$0.002100
9,000 cached + 1,000 uncached input + 1,000 output tokens$0.000777$0.001554$0.000885

In the first example, Small 4 ties off-peak Flash. In the second, off-peak Flash costs less, but peak Flash still costs more because input and output costs outweigh its cheaper cache hits. A lower cached-token rate alone does not determine the full bill.

DeepSeek context caching is automatic and depends on matching prefixes and cache availability. Do not price every repeated prompt as a guaranteed hit. Compare actual cache usage across representative conversations.

Specialized services use different billing units

Mistral OCR 4.1 lists $4 per 1,000 pages and $5 per 1,000 annotated pages. The pricing table separately lists $0.40 per 1,000 cached OCR pages. These are page-based charges, not token rates. Compare complete document-processing costs rather than placing page prices beside token prices without conversion.

Regional inference adds a 10% premium to applicable Mistral list pricing. Its feature and model restrictions matter as well; a global-endpoint quote is not automatically the price or configuration of a regional deployment. Regional inference details.

Long context: DeepSeek vs Mistral Large 4

DeepSeek’s current API models and Mistral Large 4 both advertise 1M context. That removes context-window size alone as a reason to dismiss Mistral. Small 4’s lower price should not be paired with Large 4’s context limit as though they describe the same model.

Compare models at the prompt lengths your application uses. Test evidence retrieval from the beginning, middle, and end of a document; conflicting passages; precise numerical extraction; and answers that must cite the supplied text. Measure time to a useful answer and complete cost, not just whether the request fits.

Large 4’s preview status is also part of the decision. A team that excludes preview models should not treat it as an approved production substitute merely because its context limit matches. Conversely, a team evaluating new models can include it without assuming it will outperform DeepSeek on long-context accuracy.

Performance and benchmarks: how to compare them safely

Do not choose from a single benchmark screenshot. Record the exact model version, reasoning setting, prompt, tool framework, token budget, benchmark version, and evaluation date. A coding result does not establish OCR accuracy, and a successful document example does not prove agent reliability.

The DeepSeek V4.1 Flash model card and Mistral Large 4 announcement publish evaluations across several tasks. Treat provider-reported results as evidence with a specific setup, not a universal independent ranking. In particular, results comparing Large 4 with V4 Pro do not automatically establish the same ranking against V4.1 Flash.

Build a small acceptance set from your real work. Score factual correctness, structured-output validity, tool selection, latency, retries, and manual correction time. Calculate cost per accepted result. An inexpensive first attempt may be poor value if it repeatedly requires repair.

Coding and agent workflows

DeepSeek’s V4.1 Flash release emphasizes an architecture designed for input-heavy agents, including 8B active parameters during input processing and 16B during output generation. Those architecture details do not substitute for measured throughput in your application.

Mistral offers several coding candidates: Medium 3.5 for agentic work, Small 4 as a lower-cost hybrid model, and Codestral for completion and fill-in-the-middle. Include Large 4 Preview when evaluating its documented coding and multimodal capabilities, while retaining its preview caveat.

Use the same repository, issue set, allowed tools, maximum steps, and acceptance tests. Keep function execution and authorization in your application. Require review for destructive commands or file changes; model-generated tool arguments are not permission to act.

Separate autocomplete from multi-step software engineering. A fast completion model may suit an editor even when a different model produces better repository-level changes. Likewise, a hosted model’s abilities and an agent runtime’s integrations are different evaluation criteria.

API and developer experience

DeepSeek documents OpenAI-format access at https://api.deepseek.com and Anthropic-format access at https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic. Its Anthropic compatibility guide explains supported and ignored fields; compatibility does not mean every feature transfers unchanged.

Mistral also documents OpenAI-compatible client access. Its migration guide shows using an OpenAI client with https://api.mistral.ai/v1, a Mistral key, and a Mistral model ID. Native Mistral SDKs remain another option. OpenAI compatibility is therefore not an exclusive DeepSeek advantage.

Choose the client route by the features you need, not only by how few lines change in a sample. Recheck streaming, reasoning fields, tool results, JSON validation, retries, and usage accounting. The Mistral catalog and DeepSeek model metadata are more useful for this than assuming SDK compatibility guarantees model-feature parity.

Open weights, self-hosting, and licenses

Both ecosystems include open-weight options. The DeepSeek V4.1 Flash repository provides weights under MIT. Mistral’s Large 3 and Small 4 use Apache 2.0, while Medium 3.5 uses Modified MIT. Read the actual license; Modified MIT should not be treated as identical to standard MIT.

The established Mistral models span different deployment sizes: Large 3 lists 675B total and 41B active parameters; Small 4 lists 119B total and 6.5B active. The Ministral family offers smaller alternatives. Total weights, precision, context, concurrency, and cache requirements all affect memory—not just active parameters.

Keep Large 4’s forthcoming weights separate from models you can download now. Its launch announcement describes a later weight release. Do not promise immediate self-hosting or assign a final license based only on the model page’s “Open” label.

A published maximum context is not a guarantee that your local hardware can serve it affordably. Evaluate precision, quantization quality, serving support, throughput, and recovery from failures before replacing a hosted API with your own deployment.

Multimodal, OCR, audio, and specialized models

For general image-and-text reasoning, evaluate Flash against the relevant multimodal Mistral model, including Large 4 Preview. For scanned documents, distinguish general visual understanding from a dedicated extraction pipeline.

Mistral OCR 4.1 provides paragraph-level bounding boxes, structural labels, and block-level confidence scores. That makes it a useful starting point when downstream software needs document structure rather than only a prose answer. Its confidence values still need calibration against your own documents.

DeepSeek also publishes DeepSeek-OCR-2 for self-managed OCR workflows. It should not be confused with hosted image understanding through deepseek-flash. Saying DeepSeek has no OCR model would erase this separate option; the more useful distinction is hosted OCR service versus a model pipeline you operate.

For the model setup and extraction workflow, see our DeepSeek OCR guide.

For speech work, Mistral’s audio catalog includes transcription, realtime transcription, and Voxtral TTS. Licenses differ: the catalog labels TTS weights CC BY-NC 4.0. Do not apply an Apache 2.0 license from another model to an audio deployment.

Test forms, tables, small text, rotated pages, and unreadable regions using your own acceptance criteria. Measure usable fields or correctly extracted pages, not just whether an API returns a response.

Enterprise, privacy, and governance considerations

For enterprise use, begin with data classification and deployment requirements. Determine which information may leave your environment, which processing locations are permitted, and which contract and retention controls are required. Neither vendor’s nationality nor a benchmark result establishes compliance.

Mistral regional inference offers dedicated U.S. and European endpoints for eligible models. The European geography table includes EU/EFTA locations. Only function calling is supported as a regional tool; Agents, Batch, and the Files API are unavailable there. Regional model availability must be checked against the chosen endpoint, so do not assume Large 4 is available in every region.

Regional inference does not regionalize the entire control plane: account, billing, access, and operational metadata may be handled elsewhere. Mistral’s Data Processing Addendum is relevant to commercial review, but a published DPA is not approval of every workload.

DeepSeek’s Privacy Policy states that personal data for its covered services is collected, processed, and stored in China. A separately operated local model has a different data flow, but external tools and telemetry still need review. Do not extend a statement about one deployment to every DeepSeek-based application.

Before approving either provider, document training use, retention, subprocessors, access controls, incident handling, logs, uploaded files, and tool outputs. Keep sensitive data out of evaluation prompts unless the evaluation environment is approved.

Which should you choose?

Choose DeepSeek if cache economics fit your workload

Start with Flash when repeated input is a significant part of your application’s bill. Measure both peak and off-peak behavior. Retain Pro only when evaluation justifies its different price and capabilities; do not assume it is an alias for Flash.

For long-context workloads, test evidence retrieval and output quality at realistic sizes. The case for DeepSeek should rest on demonstrated economics and task performance, not a claim that Mistral lacks a 1M-context model.

Choose Mistral if deployment flexibility matters most

Start with the specific Mistral model or service that addresses your constraint: a smaller downloadable model, a hosted OCR pipeline, audio processing, or eligible regional inference. Small 4 is also a direct candidate for low-cost text work, not merely an enterprise alternative.

Include Large 4 when a preview is acceptable for evaluation. Keep decisions about its API separate from plans for its forthcoming weights, and assess costs beyond the launch promotion.

Test both if your workload is sensitive to quality, latency, or failure modes

Use representative inputs, comparable tool access, and consistent success criteria. Report the exact deployment, model version, reasoning configuration, latency, and complete cost. Adopt the model that meets the workload’s requirements rather than the provider that wins a broad marketing comparison.

When DeepSeek is the better fit

  • Your measured workload benefits from repeated-prefix caching and applicable off-peak rates.
  • Flash or Pro meets quality requirements at a lower complete cost for your accepted results.
  • You need DeepSeek’s documented API behavior or downloadable V4.1 Flash weights.
  • Your chosen deployment passes security, privacy, and operational review.

When Mistral is the better fit

  • Small 4 or a smaller Mistral model meets your task requirements with favorable full-request economics.
  • You need a particular downloadable size or license rather than the largest available model.
  • Your workflow depends on dedicated OCR, speech, or other specialist services.
  • An eligible regional endpoint satisfies a processing-location requirement.
  • Large 4 Preview is suitable for your evaluation, without assuming GA status or permanent sale pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is DeepSeek better than Mistral?

There is no provider-wide winner. Select models for the same task and compare quality, total cost, deployment constraints, and data handling. A good OCR service and a good coding model answer different needs.

Which is cheaper, DeepSeek or Mistral?

For Flash versus Small 4, uncached-input and output rates tie off-peak, while Small 4 is lower during Flash peak hours. Flash has cheaper cache-hit tokens. Actual usage determines the full bill; see the worked examples above.

Is DeepSeek V4 Pro still available?

Yes. The DeepSeek change log confirms continued service after September 14, 2026, with billing unchanged. deepseek-v4-pro remains a separate model option rather than the current Flash service under another name.

Does Mistral support a one-million-token context?

Yes. Mistral Large 4 lists 1M context in Public Preview. That capability does not apply to every Mistral model and does not establish long-context accuracy by itself.

Is Mistral Large 4 generally available?

No. At this review it is Public Preview. Its weights are still forthcoming, according to the Mistral change log. Do not equate preview API access with GA or an available self-hosted checkpoint.

Are Mistral Large 4 prices permanent?

The displayed prices are a launch sale. Mistral announced a two-week discount; compare future costs using the then-current pricing page rather than locking the launch rate into a long-term forecast.

Does Mistral have open-weight models?

Yes. Established options include Large 3, Small 4, Medium 3.5, and Ministral 3. Licenses differ across the portfolio. Large 4’s announced weight release should be tracked separately from these available models.

Is DeepSeek open source?

Use model-specific language. V4.1 Flash has downloadable weights under MIT. That does not make every hosted service, training dataset, or component of the wider DeepSeek platform open source.

Which is better for coding?

Test the same coding tasks with comparable tool access. Codestral targets completion; Small 4 and Medium 3.5 serve other coding and agent scenarios. Include Flash, Pro, or Large 4 Preview when their capabilities and deployment constraints fit.

Which is better for enterprise AI?

Mistral may be the practical first evaluation for eligible regional inference or a specific specialist service. Neither provider is automatically approved for enterprise data. The contract, endpoint, retention rules, and required controls decide suitability.

Which is better for self-hosting?

Mistral offers several sizes, including compact Ministral models; DeepSeek V4.1 Flash is another downloadable option. Choose by the artifact, license, hardware budget, and validated serving performance. Large 4 weights are not yet part of an immediately deployable plan.

Which is better for OCR and documents?

Evaluate Mistral OCR 4.1 for a hosted, structured extraction service. Consider DeepSeek-OCR-2 for a self-managed OCR workflow, or Flash for hosted general image understanding. Validate extraction against your documents rather than assuming identical outputs.

Bottom line

Choose the model and deployment, not a universal brand winner. Flash is a useful candidate for cache-heavy workloads, while Small 4 competes directly on text API cost. Mistral’s specialist services and smaller downloadable models address different constraints; both providers now have a 1M-context option in this comparison, with Large 4 still in preview.

Keep V4 Pro separate from Flash, price actual cache hits rather than assumed reuse, and treat Large 4’s launch discount and forthcoming weights as time-limited status information. Then decide using accepted-task quality, full cost, latency, operational needs, and an approved data flow.
